Why We Need Your Support
Since we started our research studies and efforts to better understand the mechanisms underlying human diseases, we have received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the federal government agency in charge of distributing the dollars that the United States congress allocates for scientific research. Unfortunately, with the bad economy and with the drying up of government’s resources, we have been hit with major deficits and the inability to generate the financial resources that we need in order to continue our research and discovery efforts. In addition, less than 10% of the ideas that are proposed to the government for research funding support actually receive any support, and the rest are lost in the sea of applications that never succeed. To complicate matters even more, the NIH peer-review process, by which a panel of “experts” are chosen to referee research grant applications objectively, is no where near perfect and has become more and more subjective and inadequate, lacking in necessary guidelines that leave room for grave errors and inconsistencies in how the grant applications are reviewed.
The bottom line is that we need the public’s help in supporting our research and discovery efforts to a point that we can provide enough data to the biopharmaceutical companies that will then pick up the tab for the development of a new medication for use in humans (it is estimated that each drug costs more than $800 million dollars to come to market). We have come a long way and we are close to making a big difference in the health of individuals by providing better cures for osteoporosis, cancer, obesity, and other diseases of aging, and we can only continue in this path if we receive financial support from the public during these hard and challenging times!
We still have a lot of diseases to cure!!!
